The Screening and Treatment of

Maternal Mental Health

Dr. Connie Guille is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). She completed her psychiatry training and subspecialty training in perinatal psychiatry at Yale University. She is the Director of the MUSC Reproductive Psychiatry Fellowship and Women’s Reproductive Behavioral Health Program. This program provides mental health and substance use treatment to pregnant and postpartum women both in-person and via telemedicine in obstetric and pediatric practices in SC. She is the recipient of two career development awards including funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to evaluate pharmacological and behavioral interventions for pregnant women with perinatal opioid use.

The talk will focus on the screening and treatment of maternal mental health and the integration of maternal mental health services in obstetric and pediatric practices

  • Recognize the prevalence of peripartum mental health problems
  • Understand the impact of maternal depression and anxiety in general and on child development
  •  Know what are the evidence-based treatments for peripartum depression and anxiety
  • Assist women and families in connecting to treatment

 Target Audience: all providers/ practitioners working with parents and young children
